Modem Setup
OutsideView supports host connectivity via analog modems. These can be local modems, that are connected directly to the computer running OutsideView, or network modem pools.
Setting up Local Modems
1. Verify that the drivers provided by the modem manufacturer are correctly installed.
a. Open the Control Panel (Start/Settings/Control Panel)
b. Select Modems. The Modem Properties dialog box appears
c. Ensure that the modem manufacturer, the type of modem, and the COM port connections are correctly listed in the Modem Properties dialog box for all modems connected to the computer.
If Standard Modem is listed for the modem, you are using a generic Windows driver instead of one from the modem manufacturer. This may work correctly but using a driver from the modem manufacturer is preferred
d. Note what COM port is used. You will require this information later.
2. Define dialing properties for multiple locations. For example, you can define a set of dialing properties for your laptop modem for when it is necessary to dial a "9" for an outside line. You can define another set for when a credit card number is required.
a. Select Dialing Properties from the Modem Properties dialog box. The Dialing Properties dialog box appears.
b. Select New...
c. Enter the necessary information depending upon your circumstances. If your phone service includes call waiting, select the To disable call waiting, dial checkbox and then select the correct value.
d. Repeat the process for each set of properties.
3. Configure the modem to connect to the host.
a. From the Modem Properties dialog box, select the modem you wish to configure, then select the Properties button.
b. Select the General tab.
c. Ensure that the value selected for Maximum speed is at least 57600.
d. Select the Connection tab.
e. Set communication parameters as required by the modem you are calling. When connecting to a NonStop system, these values are usually:
• Data Bits: 7
• Parity: Even
• Stop Bits: 1
Setting up Modem PoolS
Outgoing connectivity through network modem pools requires a client module at each workstation that redirects any communication with a designated PC COM port to the network modem pool.
Once this client is properly configured, an OutsideView session should be set for Async I/O targeting that COM port. For example, if the redirector is set to trap any communication with COM4, the session settings for the OutsideView session (Session/Session Settings.../IO) should also be set to COM4.
The modem pool modem should be configured to echo command characters sent by clients (e.g., ATZ) and should use hardware flow control. If communication with the network modem pool cannot be established using OutsideView with the configurations described here, we recommend troubleshooting using Hyperterminal.
